Ten Rare Seconds

Today I was rewarded for all the hours I've spent this past summer, working outside in my yard.  This morning, I spent a couple of hours, pulling weeds and picking up leaves.  It was such a beautiful morning, I stopped working, grabbed a granola bar and a drink and settled down on our bench swing to refresh myself and enjoy the scenery.

As I rested, several sparrows flew in.  A few went to the birdbath and a couple flew down to the grass in front of me.  Seemingly oblivious to my presence, one of the sparrows hopped toward me.  I was surprised he came so close; that alone was a treat, but then:  The SPARROW flew up from the grass and STOOD ON MY RIGHT THIGH.  I stared in astonishment while he remained there for perhaps ten seconds.  I could feel his feet through my jeans as he moved around.  He behaved as if his visit was a perfectly natural thing to do.  Of course, I sat perfectly still, savoring each and every unbelievable second.  As easily as he came, he flew off.

I didn't move for several minutes.  I needed to absorb the joy I felt during and after this rare encounter.

As I was picking up leaves yesterday, I unexpectedly came upon this cute-as-the-dickens bunny.  I didn't see him as I approached the spot where he was sitting.  I reached for a leaf and suddenly saw him, only a few inches from my hand.  We both froze.

I slowly reached in my pocket for my camera.  The bunny wasn't startled but continued chewing a blade of grass.  I've captured the moment and will enjoy it again and again.

As a result of spending nearly my entire summer outside, it appears I'm now accepted by Southern Wisconsin animals as one more of them.

If so, I'm honored.

Wow!! That is incredible that the bird was just sitting on your leg! I'm sure he was trying to thank you for all of your hard work and all the bird food you put out for him :) That bunny is so cute. I hope they keep coming back!

GULLY: ...and what a wonderful world!

STEPHANIE: A few months ago, I chanced upon a baby robin in the exact same spot where I saw the baby bunny yesterday. I was worried that the robin was hurt but it eventually went into some bushes and then out of our yard. My summer with nature has been quite an adventure and I look forward to more of the same.

Have a great week, Steph!

I love this. I just love this. I can't even tell you how much this made my night last night. I love that all your hard work has paid off for visits like these. Did I mention that I love this? The bunny is beautiful!

SARIE: I wish you'd been there; it was just way too cool. I was totally blown away as I sat there looking at this little sparrow standing on my leg. It was incredible. Feeling his feet on my thigh was so sweet. I'm glad I had jeans on; he may not have landed on me if I'd been wearing shorts. I doubt he'd have landed on a bare leg, don't you agree?

Happy Monday, my friend.

My theory about birds landing on us is that we're too big for them to see. In other words, they're looking for trees, and don't see the forest.

ANNIE: It was pretty cool, alright!!

GULLY: All I know is that I loved it.

What a treat! It's nature up close and personal, and it was just for you because of all your hard work. You made your yard very welcoming for the lovely critters. We had fun yesterday watching a hummingbird play in one of our sprinklers.

LINDA: A treat indeed!

We got glimpses of hummingbirds but that's all. Perhaps next year I'll have to hang some feeders. Watching one playing in your sprinkler sounds like a treat too.

I hope your fall season is a beautiful one, Linda.

You were truly one with nature. Few of us can say that--literally.

MARY A: Yup! If only I could fly with them!! :)

What special moments to savor - both the bird's visit and the little bunny. I love it when nature comes to visit. Have a wonderful weekend.

That is a amazing story and moment! He was probably thanking you for all the beauty and fresh water you give them. I have a quirrel here I feed everyday. He comes up to me and take the peanut from my hand and eats it right there. Sometimes when I'm out there reading he will sit very near me or lay on a branch. I have named him/her Bouvier! And Bouvier doesn'y even run from ny dog and the dog never even runs after him either. You have to love these rare moments!

JANA: I've seen so many critters this year that I've paid no attention to in the past. Better late than never.

MADDIE: I love your squirrel story. It's amazing that wild critters can feel comfortable in our presence. When we aren't threatening them in any way, I suppose they have no reason to keep their distance.

If you build it, they will come. Love that bunny. And the sparrow on your leg -- super, super cool.
