| Begich, Boggs Visitor Center, Portage Valley Located 50 miles south of Anchorage at the tip of Turnagain Arm, Portage Valley was carved by numerous glaciers that still straddle mountain peaks visible from the valley floor. At the end of the valley, icebergs that recently calved off Portage Glacier are visible. |

| Alaska's Veteran Memorial |

| A statue of two members of the Alaska Territorial Guard (ATG), carved by Canadian sculptor, George Pratt, stands at the entrance to the memorial. One of the significant features of the memorial is unfortunately often missed by visitors. Although Denali (Mt. McKinley) is often shrouded in clouds, the binoculars of one of the ATG members is trained on the 20,237 foot mountain which is only 35 miles away at that point. |

Cheryl - I never get tired of looking at all of your beautiful pictures. I surely never realized my love affair with snowy mountains and glaciers. I have enjoyed reading and viewing your blog. AND, I think I finally figured out how to post a comment. Just call me a slow learner. I have copied several of your pics so you may see one or two of them again. Reliving the adventure never gets old. Thx for posting.

It may not seem like it but I've passed over a whole lot of the pictures I took and selected the best to put on my blog posts. Some are blurry, some are too much like those I do post and as much as I'd like to post them all, it gets quite time consuming. And then, I don't want to bore my friends and family. I can't expect them to be as "in love" with all that I saw in those 11 days as I am.

We two are IN Fairbanks on our way to Manley Hot Springs .. we stopped last night at the Veterans Memorial at milepost 147 on the Parks Highway .. NEVER PASS IT BY .. NEVER .. My Dad was in the Coast Guard .. one son the Army .. one son the Air Force .. and I was an enlisted Marine and a Naval Officer .. got 'em all covered. I worked on the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog race for a number of years. Last winter I did a lenghty post on it ..
