I found these wise words on a calendar at the office where I work.

The hard work necessary for success renders the prize all the more precious. I trained hard to prepare myself for a YMCA biathlon a few years ago. The medal was much less a reward than the satisfaction I felt when I crossed the finish line.

Would success mean anything if we didn't have to work for it?

On New Year's Day, I opened my 2012 calendar.

As with all calendars I've ever used, when I lifted the cover, there was January. That was fine. I'd surely have been disappointed if one of the other twelve months had appeared first.

I hung the calendar on the wall and admired the boats in the harbor. My eyes traveled down to the words under the scene.

I like quotes.

This one, written by I don't know who, threatened me at first. The challenge of the words momentarily paralyzed me.

A few seconds later, I turned and went about my day considering the quote. My year will be what I make of it. Waiting doesn't work; doing does.

Outside My Window

He looks majestic in red, doesn't he.

I saw more than one male cardinal today. See the second one on the lower left side? I was relaxing with my laptop this afternoon when I was distracted by this activity outside my window.

A female cardinal sat on a branch waiting for her turn at the feeder. Although she's much more subdued in color, she's pretty in her own way.

This fellow is nearly invisible against the background of white snow and the shades of gray and brown of the hedge where he is perched.

Even the seeds that fall into the snow are eaten. I like to see that.

The brilliant red cardinal is anything but invisible. Every time it snows, I'm impressed by the contrast of the red against white. It makes me pause and stare.

I don't like the cold temperatures of winter but I love the look of freshly fallen snow, the hush when I step outside and the brightness of the sun when it sparkles on the endless white blanket.

How To Unwind Underwater, Yet Stay Dry

Come and relax with these photos of our home aquarium.

I've finally taken an interest in our aquarium. My son, Jared, bought my husband an aquarium several years ago after having success with the two he has in his home. Since then, Lon has graduated to a larger tank. I went with them to a fish store in Milwaukee last weekend to see their expansive and unique inventory. I enjoyed the experience and I even picked out a fish to add to those we already have. I'm spending some time observing what goes on in our tank and I'm finding it's a great stress reliever.

Holy Spanish Mackerel

Jared did some fishing on Crescent Beach on Siesta Key, Florida. When I saw this one, I said "Holy Mackerel" but I was wrong. It's a Spanish Mackerel.

Lon and Jared both enjoy fishing. They do most of their fishing in Wisconsin and Minnesota but it's always fun for them to drop a line to see what's lurking in the waters of Florida.

What about them choppers?

One of these days I'll move on to a subject other than our happenings during our recent vacation. Right now, I'm still holding on to memories of the wonderful time we had.

Christmas on Siesta Key

Lon, Jared and I enjoyed two weeks in Florida this past December.

We arrived on December 16th and stayed until the 30th. For several days, the beach, roads and restaurants on the key and in Sarasota were quiet. A few days before Christmas, more people arrived and activity picked up.

We walked the beach nearly every day. I took this photo as we walked north from our condo along the Gulf of Mexico. This is the public beach, the site for the Sand Wars competition. (I shared Sand Wars photos and narrative in my previous blog post).

Here, we're heading south on the beach, back toward Siesta Dunes, the condo complex where we stayed.

The moon-shaped curve of the beach gives it its name.

With the sliding door open at night, we heard the awesome sound of waves like this crashing onto the beach.

Back at the public beach, the white tents in the background were set up for the Sand Wars crew to use for breaks and food during the three days of the event. The crowd to the left of the tents were viewing the behind-the-scenes activity as The Travel Channel filmed the competition between sand sculptors.

I'm always impressed with the quartz sand on Crescent Beach. It's nearly as fine as flour and no matter how hot the sun gets, the sand is always cool.

I started everyday in a lounge chair poolside. When activity picked up, I moved to the deck and finally to a lounge chair on the beach. In my beach bag, I carried a book, a writing tablet and pen, and my cell phone for occasional texting, not to mention a bottle of water, sunscreen, lipstick, my watch, sandals and a towel. With all that, I could spend hours in the sun without needing to go back to the condo for anything. Toting the bag was a nice upper-body workout!

If I wasn't so hyper, I'd love to spend more time watching the waves and the patterns that the water form on the sand. Unfortunately, I can't focus for long on watching things happen. I'm more at ease when I'm doing something like walking, reading or writing with frequent but short glances at the gulf waters. (I could take medication for that, couldn't I!!??)

I'm including this photo so you can see that I REALLY was there.

On the beach, it was easy to forget it was December and that Christmas was approaching. Except for a woman, wearing her swimsuit and a Santa hat, and a snowman sculpted in sand on the beach, it seemed like March, the month we usually spend on Siesta Key. Away from the beach, Christmas was evident in the many holiday decorations everywhere.

On Christmas Day, we drove to Disney World in Orlando. We spent the day at Epcot Center. We figured being busy would eliminate any chances of feeling strange about being away from Wisconsin.

Lon, Jared and I agreed that our Christmas in Florida was perfect.

Sand Wars on Siesta Key

There's always something going on at the public beach on Siesta Key. Last month, December, 2011, we were lucky enough to be there for the filming of the Travel Channel's production of Sand Wars. (You're right. These larger than life letters weren't made of sand. Even world-famous sculptors couldn't pull that off).

The two individuals in the foreground were the hosts of the Sand Wars presentation which will air within the next few months on the Travel Channel. We'll be watching for it since we were in the background during some of the filming. We signed papers giving them permission to include us in the show if they should choose to. (I'm definitely not holding my breath in hopes of that happening, but you never know).

This sand sculpture, BAD IDEA, is one of many constructed by teams of sand sculptors from all over the world. It was created by the team, Sanding Ovation.

I was able to get a close up shot of one of the members of the team, Shore Thing, at work on their sculpture named NO HASSLES...JUST SAND CASTLES.

I spoke with team, Sanding Ovation. They always create a totally new sculpture whenever they compete. When they aren't competing, they do sand sculptures for various events including weddings.

I didn't catch the name of this one. He was on display the first day I came upon Sand Wars. I was too busy watching the production to notice the details.

These sand sculptors were competing for a grand prize of $10,000, not bad compensation for playing in the sand.

How about this one? I'm impressed.

It was interesting to watch the camera men operating their equipment.

These panels were used to direct light where it was needed.

As you can see, we weren't the only ones intrigued by this operation.

An explosive was set in the base of each sand sculpture after its completion. Spectators voted for their favorite sculpture each day of the three-day event. The least favorite sculpture was exploded. That pile of sand above is the result of one such demolition. It's kind of sad to see only a pile of sand where something majestic had been only a second before.

As glamorous as it may seem to work for the Travel Channel, the hosts put in long hours with a lot of time spent waiting for things to happen.

A makeup and hair attendant kept the female host looking her best.

Sculpting was done in three stages. This is one of the entries in the first stage. The frames will be removed from the middle and bottom sections for stage two and three.

Spectators were prompted to cheer at the top of their lungs with the promise of a t-shirt to the loudest person. It's amazing what we'll do for a chance to get something free. Several retakes were made of all of us screaming and hollering. Technicians will edit the spectators' responses into appropriate spots in the show.

I fell for the hype. Can you blame me? It's all for the Travel Channel!! When will I ever have a better chance to be on television?

Ten minutes before the end of this phase of construction, the nose collapsed from the face of this sculpture. We watched while the sculptor tried to quickly reform a new nose before his time was up. It was disheartening to observe.

Christmas Decorations at Siesta Dunes

It was so fun seeing all the Christmas lights and decorations the first evening we spent at Siesta Dunes. The driveway from Midnight Pass Road to our condo is lined with a delightful display of all things Christmas.

Of course, you have to be there to see it at its maximum splendor but I just had to share with you what I've been enjoying in the best way I know how.

I took some closeups of several of the lit displays. Aren't these cute as can be?

How about a ride on a Christmas ferris wheel? I feel like I can jump aboard and join in the fun when I let my imagination go.

...and then there's the Christmas train tooting along with a HO,HO,HO and three happy characters bearing gifts on board. They have one for you!

I can't decide which photos to share so I'm sharing them all! I hope you don't mind.

He looks like he's leading a Christmas choir doesn't he? Wouldn't you love to sing carols with him directing the program? I'm going to do exactly that later this evening. Join in if you'd like.

I'll sneak in between these two earnest looking singers and use their sheet music. I don't think they'll object. All are truly full of the Christmas spirit. It's highly contagious; I broke out with a full blown case the moment we arrived on Friday.

The reindeer love frolicking through the Floridian foliage. The excellent traction is a nice break for them compared to the snowy areas up north.

Seals "selebrate" in their favorite way, using their noses to entertain.

Even the entrance gate is elaborately lit.

Driving or walking down the driveway is magical. I feel as if I'm at the North Pole.

This circle near the office is decorated all the way around. Have you noticed how lovely the palm trees look with their trunks encircled with colored lights? (The archway leads to the community room and office).

Ahhhh...so pretty.

A Snowman's Perils in Florida

I've learned this week that snowmen have unique challenges in Florida. I came upon this poor fellow just the other day on my walk along the Gulf of Mexico. I don't think he'd ever been in the water before and there he was, pursued by a trio of sharks!!

Walking the beach along the gulf shore of Siesta Key, we passed this cute sand snowman. I love seeing a "snowman" without having to experience the cold weather that normally necessitates such a creation.

Sip, Sip.

During November, I wrote a book. I was motivated by the promoters of National Novel Writing Month. You can get the scoop on NaNoWriMo on their website.

I originally titled my book: Writing Under the Influence. My entire book was written between sips of wine. When I took a sip, I'd interject the words: Sip, sip. As I wrote, I e-mailed chapters to my audience of one and dear friend, Sarie. She suggested I name my book: Sip, Sip. I like Sip, Sip better. It's cuter.

I often wrote here. But, where am I and where's my wine? !I must have slipped away for a refill).

Having fun while I was writing was my main priority. I Had to embark on my journey with this bottle.

I love anything cute and colorful. My second writing companion was Funky Llama.

Bottle #3 was Lucky Duck. For five days I was feeling lucky and loose.

I chose Yellow Tail for my fourth bottle, another dose of cute and colorful. It didn't taste bad either!

Mid month the wine was flowing and I began to relax with Bottle #5.

During any challenging endeavor, humor helps. I had to have some of this!

Last but not least, I sipped across the finish line with Bottle #7, Cedarburg Spice.

My first bottle lasted five days so I anticipated I'd drink six bottles in the thirty days of November. I drank seven. The title of next year's NaNo novel may well be: How I Became a Wino.

FYO: My reward for writing 50,119 words is more expensive wine from now on, nothing less than $7.00 a bottle.

My Brother Carl, A Hair Stylist?

My brothers, Tom and Carl, traveled from Michigan to spend Thanksgiving with my other two brothers, Bob and John, me and other family members.

And this is Carl and his granddaughter, Abby. All of these photos were taken two years ago. I should have taken photos at Thanksgiving this year. Duh! Carl is wearing his hair shorter with some spiking going on. He really should consider becoming a hair stylist!!

Although Carl isn't officially a hair stylist, he told me that my hair was too long in a couple of places near my temples. I asked him if he wanted to fix it for me. He said he would so I gave him a pair of scissors and held still for him. He very carefully used the scissors to snip away the hair that was out of line. Voila! When I looked in the mirror I could see that he was right. Although I had been frustrated with my hair, I had assumed my hair stylist had left it longer in those areas because my hair is so straight that it sometimes won't lie down if it's too short. After Carl's snipping, my hair is behaving quite nicely and I'm so glad he was assertive, pointed out the problem and made it better.

This is just a quick note to let you know that I haven't buried myself under the rather large number of words I've written to date for NaNoWriMo 2011. I'm happy to report that I'm right on target if I'm to reach 50,000 words by midnight on November 30th.

I'm writing approximately 1,667 words each day. If I continue at that rate, I'll finish my novel this month and be a NaNo winner. Today is day 17. My total word count after today's writing is 28,427, just a smidgen ahead of schedule.

If you like to write, it's really not hard to write 1,667 words in a day. If you've never tried, I'd like you to encourage you to do it. You might be pleasantly surprised, in fact, I bet you will.

NaNoWriMo #3

At the last minute, I decided to participate in NaNoWriMo again. National Novel Writing Month challenges individuals to write a 50,000 word novel in one month. Traditionally, this challenge takes place in November. I was drinking wine on the afternoon of October 29th. Under the influence, I decided I would commit myself to a month of writing again this year.

On November 1st, I wiped down my desktop with Windex, straightened up other areas in the room (all delaying tactics) and took a deep breath.

I bought this bottle along with a few others on Sunday, after I decided to do the novel writing thing.

I've never indulged in this particular wine. It was inexpensive, $3.99 a bottle. I was attracted to the label and the cute description.

In preparation, I wrote this title for my written work. That's the sum total of my preparation. I don't like to follow rules; I'd rather fly by the seat of my pants. Oh, I did buy the wine in preparation as well. I promised myself never to write a word until I've at least had one sip of wine.

Time waits for no man. (I heard that somewhere). I could have started writing at 12:00 midnight and here it was, 3:47 PM. I'd put in 4 hours at my job, raked leaves and wiped the dust off my desk. It was MY time. I poured myself a glass of wine...

...stared at the blank screen and began to write.

That was Tuesday, the first. Today is Saturday, the 5th day into the month. I've written my daily quota of 1,667 words every day. My present word count is 8,575.

So far, so good.

One bottle down and, at this rate, another five to go.

What's not to love about this?

Could I Be Taking Scrabble Too Seriously?

When I started playing online Scrabble (better known as WORDS WITH FRIENDS on Facebook), it was just me and my laptop.

My sister-in-law came up with some rather unusual words in my games with her. When Jill played the word-bowyer, I couldn't stand it any longer. "How are you coming up with words like that?" I asked her. She told me. Thanks to amazon.com, I quickly acquired my own copy of The Official Scrabble Players Dictionary.

Oh. I couldn't resist the Everything Scrabble book offered on the same amazon.com webpage.

I quickly tired of paging through the Scrabble books to find the lists of two and three letter words, two to five letter words containing J, Q, X or Z and so on and so forth.

I made copies of the word lists and put them in these plastic sleeves.

Those of you who know me well probably aren't terribly surprised. I rarely do anything in moderation. If I'm going to do something, by golly, I go at it with a vengeance.

I have twenty games going with nearly twenty different players. I've tried to add more but am informed that I'm not allowed more than twenty games at a time. Imagine that!

What can I say? That's Shaddy for you.

Unmotivated

Only last year, I was extremely motivated. Motivated enough to compete in a triathlon. Yup, that's me with my biking, swimming and running gear.

Lately, I can't seem to stir up enough motivation to post something of interest here on my blog. Thus, I'm borrowing from the past to gain attention today.

I guess that's not all bad, or is it?

Miles and Miles To Go

Miles' mommy, Brittany, is practicing hide-and-seek for when Miles gets a little older.

In truth, Britt doesn't like having her picture taken.

But I persisted and I'm so glad I did. She's a Doll.

My brother, John, is Miles' Grandpa Doll.

John is filling his new role handily.

A couple of weeks ago, I couldn't find my cell phone. (As a rule, I lose it more than I use it). I spent about twenty minutes searching high and low for the darn thing. I couldn't see it anywhere. You know why? I was talking on it to my sister-in-law. When I woke up to the fact, I'm sure my facial expression was very similar to that of the clay worm pictured above who lives in my flower pot.

Ten Rare Seconds

Today I was rewarded for all the hours I've spent this past summer, working outside in my yard. This morning, I spent a couple of hours, pulling weeds and picking up leaves. It was such a beautiful morning, I stopped working, grabbed a granola bar and a drink and settled down on our bench swing to refresh myself and enjoy the scenery.

As I rested, several sparrows flew in. A few went to the birdbath and a couple flew down to the grass in front of me. Seemingly oblivious to my presence, one of the sparrows hopped toward me. I was surprised he came so close; that alone was a treat, but then: The SPARROW flew up from the grass and STOOD ON MY RIGHT THIGH. I stared in astonishment while he remained there for perhaps ten seconds. I could feel his feet through my jeans as he moved around. He behaved as if his visit was a perfectly natural thing to do. Of course, I sat perfectly still, savoring each and every unbelievable second. As easily as he came, he flew off.

I didn't move for several minutes. I needed to absorb the joy I felt during and after this rare encounter.

As I was picking up leaves yesterday, I unexpectedly came upon this cute-as-the-dickens bunny. I didn't see him as I approached the spot where he was sitting. I reached for a leaf and suddenly saw him, only a few inches from my hand. We both froze.

I slowly reached in my pocket for my camera. The bunny wasn't startled but continued chewing a blade of grass. I've captured the moment and will enjoy it again and again.

As a result of spending nearly my entire summer outside, it appears I'm now accepted by Southern Wisconsin animals as one more of them.

If so, I'm honored.

Shop Now: Nature Is Giving Things Away

Dark green, light lavendar, peachy pink...only nature can please us so thoroughly and effortlessly.

Early morning, between 7:30 and 8:00, these glorious rays, beaming through the leaves of a maple tree across the street, stopped me in my rush to leave the house for work. I paused; in a second everything changed; I felt blessed and at peace.

Later that same day, I looked out the window of our family room and was again made aware of the beauty of nature, this time in the shape of a finch. Although I tried several times, other birds that were coming to feed at the same time were too quick for me to capture with my camera.

It's alright my little friend. Take it slow. I also often feel meek upon first awakening. (This little clay worm helps me gauge if this plant needs water).

A backyard squirrel added his decorating touch by depositing a walnut beside our fountain setting. My first impulse was to snatch it up. Instead, I laughed and left it right where he placed it.

Menards is having an end-of-season sale. I'm not sure about our latest addition to our screen porch; depending on my state of mind, it's quite nice or simply ghastly. Perhaps with time, it will grow on me and I won't avoid looking its way.

How about from this angle? I can say with certainty that it's pretty at night when its lights are all you can see. Oh, and the sound of trickling water is always good company.

I was getting tired of seeing and plucking mushrooms from our lawn until I came upon this red-topped one. Everyday offers something new, if only we take a few moments to open our eyes and minds to our own backyards.

I'm impressed by this bigger than usual cluster of maple seeds that I found under our Crimson King. Single or double "whirlybirds" are more common.

Our pin oak is dropping these cute acorns regularly. I've discovered that pre-autumn backyard shopping is thrilling and it's all mine for the bending and taking.

That's me with my laptop at Lake Vermilion, Minnesota, last summer. Remembering is almost as good as being there.

We'll be around home this weekend but plan to get to Door County, Wisconsin, next month. That'll be a good time.

Can It Be August Already?

During our last visit to K & W Greenery, I couldn't resist buying this dragonfly. It's exactly what I needed for this area in our backyard.

I also just HAD to purchase a few torches to lighten up several places in the backyard in the evening.

You've seen my petite birdbath before but I couldn't resist showing it off again. Notice another larger birdbath in the background.

This is what a thirsty bird sees when he dips his beak into the large birdbath.

My impatiens petals glisten after I give them their daily shower with my garden hose.

My pink hydrangea has changed color. Since I'm not a fan of pink, I prefer this altered shade.

Numerous bees hover over, buzz around and drink from the blossoms on my St. John's Wort shrubs.

Mother Nature is wonderful, but messy. Everyday I fill this basket several times with her droppings. Below are a few of the things I'm picking up off the ground after her presently.

Exhausted and ultimately deceased Cicadas fall from tree branches into the grass after noisily disturbing otherwise peaceful summer evenings.

I find these the tiny acorns nestled in the grass beneath our pin oak tree.

I've picked up hundreds, maybe thousands, of these birch leaves ravaged by Japanese beetles. Occasionally I've used a rake but normally I pick them up individually. Bending down again and again, day after day, is great for the abs.

To my dismay, mites caused these galls on my pin oak leaves early in their development. I've been assured that although they look nasty, they cause no damage to the tree. Fortunately, they're only noticeable when the leaves drop.

These banana shaped seed carriers with their offspring are dropping from my Lyndon Basswood tree. I estimate that I've picked up about a hundred of these a day for a couple of weeks now. There's never a dull moment at our place on Iris Drive.

The Crimson King Maple in the front yard can't stand to see me sitting in my chair on the front porch. When I'm not looking, she scatters these little buggers as far as she can throw them. She knows that as soon as I spot them, I'll be up and at 'em.

I like a nice, neat bed of impatiens flowers which means everyday at least once, I pick up petals that have dropped in the grass or are hanging out where I don't approve. I'm picky, picky, picky. Think twice before you get too close. I may brush you off with my tiny hand broom!!!

I had a perfect lawn in my opinion for about a week until patches of dead grass began appearing in my otherwise beautiful, lush green grass. All of the lawn experts I talked to informed me that grubs were attacking the grass roots. How dare they!!!!!!

Needless to say, I was bummed out. I stomped my feet but the damage had been done.

I pouted and fumed until Lon put this grub killer on the lawn. The dead grass patches probably won't recover this year even when the grubs are destroyed.

To end on a positive note, here's a closeup of our one and only hydrangea flower. The fullness, abundance and endless intricacies of nature can astonish us into a state of peacefulness.

I've learned a lot this summer and will continue to do so as I observe the great outdoors in my tiny place in this world.

The Things of Summer

An evening photo of a yard sprout. I didn't know anything could grow as fast as mushrooms do.

I find all kinds as I do my daily scans of the yard for intruders.

Some are quite striking in color and patterns.

I thought perhaps this trio would sing me a song but I guess they weren't in the mood.

After I admire them for a moment or two, they all end up in my basket. A perfect yard can't be seen with such uninvited characters!

Impatiens' nectar aplenty kept him busy flying from flower to flower for several minutes while I tried to catch up with him with my camera.

After taking seventeen photos, I got the one I wanted. Isn't he grand?

I can't seem to settle myself down to applying myself to adding to my blog posts. I've been very busy doing other things--mostly outside activities. You're tired of hearing me say that, aren't you?

I'm at work presently with a few minutes of free time and I decided to put a few words here in case there was anyone out there looking for something to read. It seems more and more people are away from the blogging world these days; that's alright; winter will be upon us way too soon and we'll be more inclined to indoor passions.

I hope everyone is well.

Glimpses of Summer at Shaddy's

This plant is in a plastic pouch that Lon attached to one of his birdhouse posts.

Blossoms on a St. John's Wort shrub on our berm add bright color.

I've plucked hundreds of these little rascals, mostly dome-shaped ones from the grass.

Our river birch has some rough and shaggy bark; I like it.

These impatiens thrive in the shade. If the hot sun gets to them, they wilt and my heart breaks at the sight of them. They always perk up again and I breathe a sigh of relief.

A rustic planter holds these sweeties.

Shaddy's Summer Passion

All spring and summer, I've been spending time in my yard. These three hydrangea plants under our front window only produced ONE flower which is pictured below. I've watered and fertilized the plants as you can see. I guess a lack of flowers isn't uncommon here in southern Wisconsin according to K & W Greenery.

This is it!!! It's so big I had to stake it up today or it would be lying on the ground.

My husband lures me to a chair beside his firepit on summer evenings. It doesn't take much to get me to take a seat beside him these days.

Visitors receive this greeting when they approach our front porch.

High humidity outside and air conditioning running inside created this artwork on my sliding glass door one early morning last week.

This berm adds life to the southeast corner of our yard. The birch tree behind it is giving me fits as it drops yellow leaves. This has been going on for several weeks.

That's the birch right there!! Everyday I spend a good chunk of my time picking up the leaves it drops. I've been watering it since I was told it is very sensitive to heat and lack of moisture. I'm getting plenty of exercise; I'm thankful for that!!

I added this cute little birdbath to our berm recently. It doesn't hold much water but it sure is cute.

This pagoda dogwood adds life to the southeast corner of our home. If you click on the photo you'll see our little wheelbarrow full of red impatiens.

This is another view of the same corner. As you can see, I've got the sprinkler going. Our grass is as green as it can be thanks to my constant attention to its need for moisture. I love the challenge of attemping to have a perfect lawn.

This robin appreciates the water in this birdbath. I love watching the robust splish splash when robins bathe.

In the southwest corner of our lot, this vinca vine garden used to be a sandbox. The ladder leads to the fort overhead where I've been doing some journaling recently.

I wish I could sit still for more than two minutes in this cozy corner.

We had pretty good luck growing grass where the septic tank repair was done. Some areas still need work and there are tons of weeds but at least it's mostly green.

I adore our little shed which sits in the northwest corner of our lot. That's where I go for the lawn mower on Tuesday and Friday afternoons, my designated mowing days.

That's another birch tree. It's just as naughty as the one in the front yard.

The rabbits have been eating the impatiens at the base of our pin oak. I sprinkled some granules on them this afternoon. They won't hurt animals but will repel them. I hope it works!!

I sat in that chair on the front porch while I composed this blog post. We've had rain recently so I haven't had to run the sprinkler here, there and everywhere. It's nice to have some time to share these photos with you.

Welcome To a Scene in Our Backyard

Please take a chair and enjoy the delightful sound of our newly acquired, lighted trickling water pots and the beauty of our first summer with coneflowers.

The continuous background sound of water trickling as it travels from pot to pot is relaxing and soothing as I work in this area.

We've fallen in love with the colors and impact provided by these hardy coneflowers. We plan to add several more plants to strategic spots in both our front and back yards.

I even have a new camera but can't tear myself away from my perfect-yard obsession to experiment with it.

My Unpleasant Yard Visitor

Before I left for work this morning, I walked around the yard with a cup of coffee. I found these two unwelcome guests hanging out in the bark chips on the north side of our lot. Since they weren't there yesterday evening, they had to have snuck in during the night.

Upon searching the internet, I discovered this awful sight is "dog vomit slime mold." I also learned that it's not harmful to plants, animals or humans and can't be prevented from showing up. It grows in mulch.

I didn't have time to dispose of it before I left for work, but during my lunch hour I immediately went to it. I scooped it up easily with a small shovel and wrapped it up in a sheet of tin foil and disposed of it in the garbage.

I've seen numerous types of mushrooms around the yard over the last several weeks, but this slime mold makes them look much more acceptable.

I hope I haven't ruined your day. I just couldn't resist sharing this unusual finding of mine. If you find something similar in your bark chips or mulch, at least you'll know what it is.

Breathe deeply, the scent is delightful.

The stems with the clinging bubbles are a sight to see.

Get a load of this yellow splendor.

This is a new grouping we added this year. A small variegated grass plant is hiding behind the mushroom.

A Japanese maple found its way home with us after shopping at K & W Greenery.

We also added a pair of these to the shrubs that surround our screen porch.

You've seen this before but I just had to show it again and mention that I painted the playground a few weeks ago. I'm not completely done, but from the front it looks good!!

We set this planter on a few thick chunks of chopped up tree branches so we could see the flowers from inside the screen porch.

Excuse me for being stuck on one subject for my blog posts. Nearly all my spare time is spent in the yard, so that's where my heart is invested.

(I hope this looks the way I want it to because blogger won't let me edit my posts anymore. Oh well, here goes!)

I'd Rather Water Elephants Than Flowers

How much water isn't too much for flowers?

It seems I tend to overwater.

Then I hold back and probably don't water them enough.

I love my yard and my flowers but I get very frustrated when it comes to keeping them hydrated. These pictures were taken shortly after we purchased these hanging planters. Presently, the trio doesn't look quite so nice.

Hopefully, I'll get the hang of it before it's too late.

A Swing for the Elderly

We replaced our weathered bench swing with this new model. It's hanging from a playground we built for our son, many, many years ago. Although, never used, we haven't had the heart to take it down so we plant flowers in the sandbox and have a bench swing where regular swings used to hang. I may turn the playhouse into a reading loft!!

A Belated Welcome to the Month of June

On the 14th, our neighbor, Bill, will add another year to his stockpile.
June 16th, my youngest brother, John Doll, will have his day.

My longtime friend, Beth, will surely enjoy her special day in her own special way.

After Pictures

After a pipe was replaced in our septic system, we had this to deal with. The pile on the left is dirt and big hunks of sod. We separated the loose dirt and sod.

The ground in our backyard had sunk in the area of our septic system. We figured now was a good time to level the yard out. We bought eight yards of dirt which was dumped by a huge dump truck in our driveway. We hauled the black dirt with wheelbarrows from the driveway to the backyard.

On Memorial Day, we were satisfied with the level of the yard so we seeded the area and covered it with straw. Now we are watering it several times a day in hopes of having success with growing new grass. The lid to the septic tank is under the birdbath and easily accessible for pumping.

I'm proud of Lon and I. We worked very, very hard to accomplish this task. I'm sorry it took me so long to post these "after" pictures but I've been busy working in the yard. I can't say I totally enjoyed hauling dirt with a wheelbarrow but all the other work outside has been fun.

Recently, I've been working hard in our yard. Included here are four views of my backyard playground.

Unfortunately, due to septic system problems, some major digging will be going on tomorrow. The pipe that leads from the septic tank to the dry well will be replaced which means the area to the right of the birdbath (as viewed in first photo) will be invaded to a depth of over eight feet. If I liked playing in piles of dirt and gravel, I'll have plenty to run up and down after the hole is dug, but that's not my thing.

Hopefully, I won't even see the piles since they'll be used to refill the hole before I get home from work, unless I'm brave enough to zip home during my lunch break for a peek at the horror.

We were warned that we'll have a big mess after the excavation is done. Thus, I'll have an extra challenge ahead of me as I assist in getting our views back to normal. Thank God, my husband-Lon enjoys playing in the yard too. In fact, I'm sure he'll do the reseeding. I may focus more on the front yard in order to avoid observing the slow process of regrowing grass.

I'll be back with the not so lovely "after pictures" later this week.

This will either break my love of yard work or I'll rise to the challenge. Wish me luck, please.

This afternoon, after working for a couple of hours in the yard, I was hungry.

I was so hungry that I opened this can of Campbell's Spaghetti, grabbed a fork, took a seat on the front porch and gobbled it up. I didn't heat it up or even put it in a bowl. I enjoyed it tremendously right from the can.

Dang, it was good, so good that I ate the entire contents, two servings. Besides that, I ate out without waiting in line, dealing with a waitress or being obligated to leave a tip!

Shaddy Goes Out For Lunch--Second Version

Blogger temporarily lost my original post on this subject, so here's my second version. My bad memory is evident!!

After working in the yard yesterday, I was good and hungry. I searched high and low for a quick meal and eventually found this can of spaghetti in the cupboard. Aha! It was exactly what I needed.

I opened the can, grabbed a fork and took a seat on the front porch. I ate straight from the can until the last bit was gone and, by golly, I savored every forkful.

It's like this: When I'm hungry, look out. I can't take the time for heating and eating from a bowl like a normal person. Yesterday was one of those days. I was starving and couldn't take the time for preliminary preparations.

Okay. Now it's your turn to share something you do that's kind of unmentionable but fun to laugh about.

Can You Come Out and Play?

Saturday and Sunday, Lon and I spent many hours outdoors planting flowers in our yard.

As we sat drinking coffee on the front porch early Sunday morning, I decided our yard light needed some company. After a trip to Menard's, we came up with this grouping. I like it!!

Shucks!! I just realized that Lon and I won't be able to give each other rides around the yard in this wheelbarrow anymore. Bummer!

I planted impatiens around this tree in the back yard and around another tree in the front yard. After a few weeks, these plants with their red blossoms will be pushing and shoving each other and overflowing the sides of the planter. I can't wait!

Uh, oh!! These fellows and all their buddies are going to get mighty thirsty during the next several months. Something tells me I'll be toting a hose and a watering can to all four corners of the yard on a regular basis. That's a must if I want to keep all of our flowers alive and thriving.

I put a fresh coat of red paint on this cardinal yesterday. The harsh winter weather and the sun had faded him to a pale purple color, totally uncharacteristic of a vibrant cardinal.

The potted plants below add life and vibrant color to the table on our screen porch.

Our Hospitable Chipmunk

We added this colorful and whimsical mushroom to our backyard decor last week. On Saturday morning, I was tickled to see that our resident chipmunk took time in his busy day to be the first to make our newcomer feel welcome.

I Ain't No Dumbbell!!!!!

After work today, I drove to NorthPointe to workout. I pulled into a parking space, changed my mind about working out and pulled out of the parking space.

Of course, since I avoided working out, I didn't even touch a dumbbell today, but I sure felt like one!!!! Although, I immediately shook that feeling off. It's finally sunny and warm today here in Wisconsin, too nice to be inside. Looking back on my change of plans, I'm applauding myself.

It's a wonderful reminder to me that being alive is amazing in itself. Everything else is less significant. I'm comforted by the message wrapped up in these few words.

I plan to take more time focusing on simply being alive with no thoughts of the future or the past. It'll be a challenge but I believe I'm ready.

Come and Get It

We're having a rummage sale this weekend.  It's rainy and 38 degrees but we had quite a few shoppers already. We didn't advertise, instead we put up signs on the busy intersections directing people to our garage.

I don't enjoy the setting up process but it's fun when people start to come. Compared to the patients who come to the dental office, rummagers are in a much better state of mind. I get a kick out of shooting the breeze with those who are browsing through our stuff.

We'll probably have the sale again later in the month when the city wide rummage sale is scheduled. I know we'll continually clear out our closets, cupboards and basement as the days go by. I like having plenty of time to decide whether I want to part with my possessions.

I LOVE having more room in my closets and drawers. I feel more in control when I'm not overwhelmed with an abundance of stuff I'm not even using.

Well, I guess I'll go take another run through of the house and perhaps I'll add some things to the sale that will be just what someone else needs.

Update: It's 6:00PM on Sunday. We've been selling stuff since 8:30 yesterday with rain, snow and sleet, although today it's sunny but cool. We made around $190 so far. Not bad, huh?

I Sense We're Blessed

I turned the page and found this treasure.

Although leaves like these won't be present for several months, this photo displays the beauty of nature evident in autumn.

Do we appreciate "the heavens, nature and God" as much as Anne Frank did? Let's follow her fine example. It really shouldn't be difficult for us since we are blessed with senses she never had. I'd venture to say that Anne Frank had much more sense than all of us put together! Do you agree?

Three Enlightening Books

I've read three enlightening books recently. Actually, I haven't finished Sarah's Key by Tatiana De Rosnay. The other two books are Little Bee by Chris Cleave and The Help by Kathryn Stockett.

If you want light reading, these books aren't for you. Every one of these books tells a story of the horror that humans have carried out against other human beings. I think we need to know and we need to remember even when the memories are painful.

All of these books are extremely well-written. I recommend them to all of you. In spite of the emotionally shocking elements, I'm quite certain you'll be glad you invested your reading time in them.

Nature Is Back From Her Winter Vacation

As I was doing yard work yesterday, I was pleasantly surprised by this colorful display along the south side of our house. Lon told me these are wildflowers. Seeing them prompted me to search for new growth in other places in our yard.

I found several plantings with new growth hiding under stray leaves and bark chips. I uncovered the tender green new beginnings and promised all of them that I'll revisit them again and again during the spring, summer and fall months.

I know I'll be astounded over the next several days and weeks as nature goes to work with her inspirational touches, paint brush and color palette.

Ever Eat at The Crow's Nest?

The Crow's Nest restaurant can be found at several locations in the U.S. We ate twice in March at the Venice, FL location. We will definitely be going back there again and again during our vacations to Siesta Key.

I had the best walnut-crusted salmon and the best filet mignon I've ever devoured before and believe me, I devoured them shamelessly.

If you have the opportunity to dine at a Crow's Nest restaurant, please do. I have a feeling that everything on their menu is deelish!!

What's On Your April Calendar?

Yippee! April is only a few days away. I turned the page in my journal/datebook, taped April's calendar page right where I wanted it and added the birthdays I always remember at this time of the year.

When I catch myself doing a foolish thing, I like to share my embarrassment with whoever's near. Why not share silliness enthusiastically? Laughter is the best medicine and works wonders in glamourizing foolishness.

Coincidentally, April kicks off with April Fools' Day. Hey, how about that! We're given specific instruction to be fools and of course, we'll do it with great enthusiasm.

My niece, Beth, will celebrate her day on April 2nd. My friend, Don, will kick up his heels on the 22nd. HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO BOTH OF YOU!

The Mote Aquarium, Sarasota, FL

Lon, Jared and I visited the Mote Aquarium in Sarasota, FL on March 20th, the day before we came back to Wisconsin.

Lon and Jared both have aquariums of their own. Needless to say, this visit was right up their alley. Jared has a wealth of knowledge regarding starting up and maintaining home aquariums. He gifted Lon with the one he presently enjoys.

Whether you have an avid interest or not, I can't imagine anyone not enjoying a visit to view the splendors of the underwater world.

These orange and white swimmers are clown fish. The variety of live plants around them provide an awesome environment.

Can you imagine walking on stilts day in and day out?

Picking out this creature is a bit challenging. Do you see the mouth and the big ball eyes above it? This fellow creeped me out!

Mysterious-looking is my adjective for this.

Too many appendages to keep track of, don't you think?

What big and woeful eyes you have!

Around and around and around they go...

...dragging their tails behind them.

These come wrapped in aluminum foil, ready for baking. I didn't mention that to them though.

They meant business and had places to go and important things to do.

It's crazy to be so close to these monsters and yet so safe.

This pair of Lion fish are dressed for some grand gala event. I felt like a slob next to them in my blue jeans.

If you were as big as this manatee, you'd eat an entire head of lettuce in one gulp too!

Sarasota's World-Famous Sculpture

We've driven past this sculpture many times over the years since we've been vacationing on Siesta Key. Finally, I took the time to photograph it.

Perhaps you're familiar with the photograph this sculpture replicates. The joy of this couple when World War II ended is especially poignant in this much larger than life sculpture that towers high overhead along a Sarasota highway.

Don't you just love all that this sculpture says about the importance of love when war wages?

Fishing in the Gulf

Jared fishing in the Gulf of Mexico

My son, Jared, loves to fish. He spent a few hours every day fishing while we were in Florida. His luck has been better previous years, but he continued to plug away regularly this trip.  In Venice, FL, there's a wonderful fishing pier. Jared spent some time there this year but the fish weren't biting and fishermen were scarce.

Jared had his best luck this year beyond the wall on Crescent Beach on Siesta Key. He caught a few lady fish and a puffer, enough to keep him interested.

A pretty good sized stingray came completely up out of the water not far from where he was standing with his pole one afternoon. Talk about an adrenaline rush!  That's the kind of experience that keeps Jared fishing. He's also been close to sharks in the gulf waters.

Jared often stands on rocks or on the shore rather than in the water. This picture is taken where the water doesn't get deep until far from the shore.

Early Friday on our way to view the beach.

We aren't the only ones out this morning.

The bright sun made it hard to look toward the camera. Everyone wants coffee when they see us with ours.

The walk down the stairs and past the pool plum tuckered me out.

Lon sits with his cup with his feet in the wonderful Crescent Beach sand.

I wasn't expecting this little fellow to hop along beside us.

After verifying the gulf was still where it belonged, Lon cooked up some sausage for our breakfast sandwiches.
