When I Say I Am A Christian

Poem by Carol Wimmer

When I say, "I am a Christian"
I'm not shouting, "I've been saved!"
I'm whispering, "I get lost
That's why I chose this way."

When I say, "I am a Christian"
I don't speak with human pride
I'm confessing that I stumble
Needing God to be my guide.

When I say, "I am a Christian"
I'm not trying to be strong
I'm professing that I'm weak
And pray for strength to carry on.

When I say, "I am a Christian"
I'm not bragging of success
I'm admitting that I've failed
And can not ever pay the debt.

When I say, "I am a Christian"
I don't think I know it all
I submit to my confusion
Asking humbly to be taught.

When I say, "I am a Christian"
I'm not claiming to be perfect
My flaws are all too visible
But God believes I'm worth it.

When I say, "I am a Christian"
I still feel the sting of pain
I have my share of heartache
Which is why I seek his name.

When I say, "I am a Christian"

I do not wish to judge

I have no authority

I only know I'm loved.

My friend, Lenore, posted this poem on her blog today. As I read it, I realized that I often get it all wrong. I often believe that because I am a Christian, I should be constantly striving to be perfect, wise, successful, and strong. Carol Wimmer's words remind me that it's because of my own inability to ever achieve these things, that I need to follow Christ.

Happy Easter to each and every one of you!

Well said my friend, though it is easier to sulk in my shortcomings than to rejoice in His overcoming.

Long time, no see. It's great to hear from you.

It is easy to compare ourselves to others and then pout when we come up short. That's when we'd benefit from focusing on all that we do have.

I'd venture to say your strengths far outweigh your shortcomings! But then, I should probably consult with Beautiful before I venture on.

All's well that ends well.

:) -End- :)

My friend Cathi pointed me to your blog. (She's a blog stalker and never leaves comments.) She knew I'd like it. And I do! Happy Resurrection Sunday to you!
