This Evening's Blue Moon

A blue moon.

When I answered the phone about half an hour ago, it was our neighbor, Bill.  He told me about the "blue moon" that was in the night sky this evening.

Lon and I met Bill in the road and we all looked at the moon with his binoculars.  I went back in the house, got my camera and took all of the pictures above.  With the naked eye, the moon wasn't this beautiful color.  When I zoomed in with my camera and focused the lens, this is the color that I saw and the camera processed.

On The Weather Channel website, I read this:  Though blue moons happen more often than "once in a blue moon," enjoy tonight; the next seasonal one isn't until May 21st, 2016.

What an exciting way to cap off this beautiful summer day!

Thanks, Bill.

P.S.  Per Wikipedia:  A blue moon is an extra full moon that appears in a subdivision of a year, either the third of four full moons in a season or, recently, a second full moon in a month of the common calendar. Metaphorically, a "blue moon" is a rare event, as in the expression "Once in a blue moon."

The phrase has nothing to do with the actual color of the moon, although a literal "blue moon" (the moon appearing with a tinge of blue) may occur in certain atmospheric conditions; e.g., when volcanic eruptions or exceptionally large fires leave particles in the atmosphere.
